“Reggae’s favorite son.” - Shanghai Daily
UCSB Arts & Lectures presents two performances by reggae legend Ziggy Marley on Sunday, October 10 – an afternoon family show at 3 PM at UCSB Campbell Hall and a full-length evening show at 7 PM at the Arlington Theater, 1317 State St, Santa Barbara. In the wake of dual successes – the 2006 Grammy® Award-winning album Love Is My Religion and his newest Grammy® Award-winning CD Family Time – beloved reggae scion Ziggy Marley embraces both the spiritual and emotional side of life performing music that “people need to hear.” His easygoing message delivers themes of love, responsibility, unity and freedom in fun-filled tunes that resonate with die-hard Marley fans while introducing today’s youngest generation to reggae. “This [music] is from my heart,” says Ziggy – the only thing he finds more joyful than making it is sharing it with the world.
Ziggy Marley’s third solo release, Family Time (Tuff Gong Worldwide), offers a full collection of family-oriented songs – original tunes and a few covers – that is highly listenable many times around with a quality of musicianship that parents will appreciate. “Instantly winning,” writes The Wall Street Journal, “the music is rich with reggae rhythms and melodies you and your children will be singing together with joy.”
“I know how important music can be in a child’s growth and development, and in a parent’s connection with their children,” explains Ziggy. “[Family Time] represents my daily family life and is inspired by my three-year-old daughter Judah and baby Gideon. It was a joy to make and opened up new avenues in my creativity.”
Ziggy Marley’s second solo album, Love is My Religion (Tuff Gong Worldwide) showcases his tightly rolled talents as a songwriter (writing all cuts), musician (playing most of the instruments), and producer (shepherding all dozen tracks, with three co-produced by Grammy winner Ross Hogarth). Written “all over the world,” with some songs penned during his youth, the album’s musical center is clearly reggae, peppered by African percussion and other flavors. On the title track, “Love is My Religion,” his message is a unifying devotion to love that “needs to be preached in churches and mosques and synagogues.” Friendship is one of the album’s recurring themes, whether as the core of monogamous love or the connective tissue of global brotherhood.
Ziggy Marley’s career began as a family affair 30 years ago. At his father, reggae icon Bob Marley’s urging, Ziggy, brother Stephen and sisters Cedella and Sharon formed the triple Grammy®-winning vocal group The Melody Makers. After two decades with the group Ziggy released his debut solo album Dragonfly (RCA Victor Group) in 2003, featuring such guest artists as Flea and John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Mike Einziger and DJ Kilmore (Incubus). He has contributed to a variety of soundtracks including 50 First Dates and Shark’s Tale, in which he delved into acting for the first time, playing the character of Bernie, the Jamaican jellyfish.
Ziggy Marley’s family and full-length concerts are presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures and sponsored by 99.9 KTYD radio, Santa Barbara Independent, sbparent.com, 91.9 KCSB radio and Westerley Vineyards. Tickets for the family show are $10. Tickets for the full-length evening show are $53, $43 and $33 for the general public and $23 for students who must present a valid ID.
