UCSB Arts & Lectures presents An Afternoon with Conan O'Brien on 4/16 at 4 pm

“Modest, wry, self-effacing and demonstrably the most intelligent of the late-night comics.”-The Washington Post

Wielding “a comic identity as distinctive as his name” (The New York Times), Conan O'Brien has established himself among today’s most original and best-loved personalities in comedy. His quirky humor and award-winning writing have entertained audiences for decades, in a career that has spanned comedy pillars like Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, Late Night and The Tonight Show.

As a popular late-night television host, O’Brien made his stamp with his wry, self-effacing repartee with Hollywood A-listers and original bits. Now host of Conan on TBS, he has expanded the late-night arena with digital video clips and adventures abroad to Cuba and Armenia. See why millions of fans worldwide have proclaimed themselves Team Coco, in this hilarious evening with the veteran comedy writer whose trademark spontaneity and off-the-cuff wit have made him “late night’s king of cool” (Entertainment Weekly).

A Harvard graduate and two-time president of the venerable Harvard Lampoon, O’Brien moved to Los Angeles upon graduation and joined the writing staff of HBO’s Not Necessarily the News. Lorne Michaels, Executive Producer of Saturday Night Live, hired O’Brien as a writer in 1988. O’Brien left SNL in 1991 and soon signed on as a writer/producer for The Simpsons, where he later became the show’s supervising producer. In 1993 Michaels selected O’Brien to succeed David Letterman as the new host of Late Night on NBC.

During his years at Late Night, O’Brien and his team were consistently honored with Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy-Variety Series and, in 2007, the Late Night writing team won their first Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy, Music or Variety Series, after ten years of nominations. O’Brien and the Late Night writing staff also won six Writers Guild Awards for Best Writing in a Comedy/Variety Series, including two consecutive wins in 2002 and 2003 and 12 nominations overall.

In June, 2009, O’Brien became host of the coveted The Tonight Show, with Will Farrell as the first guest. O’Brien made his final appearance as host of The Tonight Show in January, 2010. For many, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien was too short-lived; his fans vociferously expressed their support as Team Coco online and at rallies.

In April, 2010, O’Brien hit the road, launching his aptly titled comedy roadshow, the Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour. The two-month, 30-city tour sold out every location. Along with starting the tour, O’Brien also announced that he would launch his TBS talk show Conan, where O’Brien continues to engage longtime fans and new audiences alike with his unique mix of smart yet goofy humor. O’Brien is now the longest-tenured host in late-night.
