UCSB Arts & Lectures Presents Sebastião Salgado on 3/2

Internationally acclaimed photographer Sebastião Salgado in conversation with Pico Iyer, on Wed., Mar. 2, at 8:00 p.m.

“Possibly the best-loved photojournalist in the world.” The Guardian (U.K.)

For the last 40 years, photographer Sebastião Salgado has been traveling through the continents in the footsteps of an ever-changing humanity. He has witnessed some of the major events of our recent history, documenting international conflicts, starvation and exodus.

Salgado has traveled in more than 100 countries for his epic photographic projects, calling attention to the effects of poverty, famine and industrialization through his striking black and white images. Turning away from social photography, his most recent project, Genesis, is a collection of images depicting nature, animals and indigenous people in breathtaking beauty. For this unprecedented photographic tribute to the planet’s beauty, Salgado embarked upon the discovery of pristine territories, wild fauna and flora and grandiose landscapes as a path for humanity to rediscover itself in nature. In conversation with acclaimed writer and Santa Barbara favorite Pico Iyer, best known for his fascinating chronicles of surprising cultural intersections, Salgado will give an illustrated presentation of Genesis and other iconic works.

“So many times I’ve photographed stories that show the degradation of the planet,” Salgado states. “I thought the only way to give us an incentive, to bring hope, is to show the pictures of the pristine planet – to see the innocence. And then we can understand what we must preserve.”

Salgado has been awarded every major photographic prize. He is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also the subject of the award-winning documentary film The Salt of the Earth, directed by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado.

Salgado’s photography books include Other Americas (1986), Sahel: l’homme en détresse (1986), Sahel: The End of the Road (2004, U.S.), Workers (1993), Terra (1997), Migrations and Portraits (2000) and Africa (2007). His work has appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines, and his touring exhibitions are presented throughout the world.

Born in Brazil in 1944, Salgado lives in Paris, where, after studying economics, he began his career as a professional photographer in 1973. He worked with the photo agencies Sygma, Gamma and Magnum Photos until 1994, when he and his wife Lélia Wanick Salgado formed Amazonas images, an agency created exclusively for his work. Since the 1990s, Salgado and Lélia have worked to restore a section of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. In 1998 they succeeded in turning this land into a nature reserve and created the Instituto Terra, dedicated to a mission of reforestation, conservation and environmental education.

Salgado and publisher Benedikt Taschendiscuss his life-changing project Genesis.
