UCSB Arts & Lectures presents a Pink Martini Holiday Show Thurs., Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. at the Arlington Theatre, 1317 State St. Portland’s 12-piece “little orchestra” – the worldly and beguiling Pink Martini – returns for a festive concert of holiday favorites and more!
Beloved chanteuse China Forbes – back in Santa Barbara after more than four years – performs with Pink Martini, led by effervescent bandleader/pianist Thomas Lauderdale. Influenced by sultry Latin music, swinging jazz, cabaret, vintage film scores and more, the fabulously eclectic ensemble will intoxicate you with its polished and glamorous sound.
The band will perform selections from its best-selling, multi-denominational holiday album Joy to the World, recent album Get Happy (Sept. 24) and Pink Martini classics.
Combining equal parts class and sass, this internationally renowned ensemble is not to be missed. Get your fill of heady holiday cheer and goodwill toward all, Pink Martini-style!
About Pink Martini
The irrepressibly talented Thomas Lauderdale founded Pink Martini in 1994 in Portland, Ore. Three years later, he asked Harvard classmate China Forbes to join the band. Their partnership resulted in “Sympathique,” an overnight hit single in France, and they later found international success in 1997 with their eponymous debut album. Collaborating with numerous singers over the years, the band has since released Hang On Little Tomato (2004), Hey Eugene! (2007), Splendor in the Grass (2009), Joy to the World (2010), 1969 with Saori Yuki (2011) and Pink Martini - A Retrospective (2011).
In January 2012, bandleader Thomas Lauderdale began work on Pink Martini’s seventh studio album when he recorded the Charlie Chaplin song “Smile” with the legendary Phyllis Diller. It turned out to be Diller’s final recording and became the soundtrack for many tributes to her when she passed away six months later. The new album, titled Get Happy, was released this fall and features singers China Forbes and Storm Large along with special guests Rufus Wainwright, The von Trapps and Ari Shapiro.
