UCSB A&L presents Rachel Maddow
UCSB Arts & Lectures presents the Santa Barbara debut of charismatic, Emmy-winning TV host Rachel Maddow in An Afternoon with Rachel Maddow on Sun., Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. at the Arlington Theatre, 1317 State St.
Maddow is the funny, “whip-smart” (Time magazine) host of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show. The hit nightly news program features her takes on the biggest stories of the day – political and otherwise – including lively, respectful debate with guests from all sides of the issues, in-depth analysis and stories found nowhere else on cable news. The Hollywood Reporter dubs her “a poster girl for civilized give-and-take in an increasingly unpleasant and contentious political climate.”
Maddow is the first openly gay person to host a primetime news program. She is the author of the recent New York Times best-seller, Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power, a “smart and deeply documented” look (Los Angeles Times) at America’s drift into perpetual war.
The critically acclaimed book addresses “this simple, bigger picture question of why it is that in my adult life that we have been at war so much of the time,” says Maddow, 39. “In this very young 21st century, we have been at war so much of the time that we don’t really think of ourselves as being at war anymore. Being at war is the new normal for America.” Wired.com describes the book as “provocative... Asks fundamental questions about the process by which the U.S. now goes to war that pretty much never get asked by the media.”

About Rachel Maddow
Rachel Maddow was named MSNBC political analyst in January 2008. She received the John Steinbeck Award from the Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State University in 2012 and the Walter Cronkite Faith & Freedom Award from the Interfaith Alliance in 2010. She first gained national prominence as a host on Air America Radio, where she worked from its inception in 2004. Prior to joining AAR, she worked for WRNX in Holyoke, Mass., and WRSI in Northampton, Mass. Maddow has a bachelor’s degree in public policy from Stanford University. She earned her doctorate in political science at Oxford University, which she attended on a Rhodes Scholarship. She lives in New York City and Massachusetts with her partner, artist Susan Mikula.
