“The preeminent humorist of his generation.” – Entertainment Weekly
UCSB Arts & Lectures https://artsandlectures.sa.ucsb.edu/ presents An Evening with David Sedaris, back by popular demand to read from his newest work Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary on Friday, April 29 at 8 PM at The Arlington Theatre. The bestselling author of the books Naked, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and When You Are Engulfed in Flames, David Sedaris is one of the most observant humor writers addressing the human condition today. He deftly slices through cultural euphemism and political correctness with a sardonic wit and insightful candor that have made him a literary rock star. The Toronto Globe and Mail declares, “Sedaris has hit upon the narrative equivalent of Pepsi, or the PlayStation, or oxygen, or the haircut: something that others in the world might actually want and find useful… He’s smart, he’s caustic, he’s mordant, and, somehow, he’s… well, nice.”
David Sedaris’s recently-released book Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary with illustrations by Ian Falconer (writer/illustrator of the Olivia picture book series) is a delightful collection of sharply observed fables for a new generation. Told with Sedaris’s trademark shrewdness, hilarity and good nature, the fairytale critters and their situations bear an uncanny resemblance to the insanity of our own everyday lives. In “The Toad, the Turtle, and the Duck,” three strangers commiserate about animal bureaucracy while waiting in a complaint line. In “Hello Kitty,” a cynical feline struggles to sit through his prison-mandated Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. In “The Squirrel and the Chipmunk,” a pair of star-crossed lovers is separated by prejudiced family members. The Boston Globe calls Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk “A joy to read... Sedaris [is] a connoisseur of human nature at its worst;” while People magazine declares, “[Sedaris] is the best there is.”

David Sedaris is the author Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice, as well as collections of personal essays, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and When You Are Engulfed in Flames, each of which became a bestseller. He was the editor of Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules: An Anthology of Outstanding Stories. Sedaris’s pieces appear regularly in The New Yorker and have twice been included in “The Best American Essays.” He and his sister, Amy Sedaris, have collaborated under the name “The Talent Family” and have written half-a-dozen plays which have been produced at La Mama, Lincoln Center, and The Drama Department in New York City. These plays include Stump the Host, Stitches, One Woman Shoe, which received an Obie Award, Incident at Cobbler’s Knob, and The Book of Liz, which was published in book form by Dramatists Play Service. David Sedaris’s original radio pieces can often be heard on This American Life, distributed nationally by Public Radio International and produced by WBEZ.
