Sonic Youth - CANCELLED

Saturday, September 26, 2009, 08:00pm

CANCELLED

LOS ANGELES, CA (Wednesday, September 9, 2009) - Sonic Youth and Matador are totally bummed to announce that guitarist Lee Ranaldo has fractured his left wrist - requiring the band to reschedule and cancel portions of their upcoming west coast tour.

Refunds can be obtained at the point of purchase.

Lee fractured his wrist while playing tennis, no minor injury for a guitarist, writer, and visual artist. Please join us in wishing him a quick and thorough recovery.

Acclaimed American rock band Sonic Youth will perform in the intimate setting of the Arlington Theatre on Saturday, September 26th in support of their newest album The Eternal that was released in July.

The Eternal is Sonic Youth’s 2009 celebration of newfound freedom. After many years signed to an ever precarious corporate label, the band has been liberated and has released this CD with their friends at Matador. Inspirations ran high in preparation for the recording. Abandoning the time tested routine of writing and rehearsing a cycle of songs in one time period, Sonic Youth changed tactics and would compose two to three tracks one weekend and record them the following weekend. After a solid month they had a dozen killers.

The twelve tunes that comprise The Eternal are a fireworks display of Sonic Youth’s touchstones. From the primal no wave attack of its earliest days, to the radical chording and song structures of its 90s period, to the more focused and contemporary exploration of the last five years.

Sonic Youth began in 1980 in downtown NYC and were associated with the No Wave art and music scene. Part of the first batch of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. As a result, the band was pivotal in the rise of the alternative rock movement and has been praised for ‘redefining what rock guitar could do’ though the use of a variety of unorthodox guitar tunings. The current lineup consists of Thurston Moore (vocals/guitar), Kim Gordon (vocals/bass/guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals/guitar), Mark Ibold (bass) and Steve Shelley (drums).
